May Queen

I recently ran across an old Alpha Chi newsletter that included some information that some of you may not have known before. There were two headlines:

PEGGY HORR REIGNS AS QUEEN OF MAY
Judges, Senior Women Choose Alpha Chi As Most Beautiful

“Chosen by the vote of all the senior women on campus, Peggy Horr reigned as DePauw’s May Queen at the Senior Prom, May 1st.
“Peggy is one of three candidates selected from a group of twelve by three faculty judges: Professor Reid Winsey, Miss Ivey, and Dr. Carson. The original twelve candidates, one from each sorority house and dorm on the campus, were judged on the basis of beauty and queenliness. The three girls whom the judges seleced as having these qualities were then voted on by the women of the entire senior class.
“Jordan Shepard, president of the senior class, presented Peggy with her crown at the Senior Prom in Bowman Gym this year. Formerly, the president of AWS crowned the queen in the Dell behind Longden Hall. Cancellation of this traditional May Day program was due to food rationing which made it impossible to hold Mother’s Day this year.
“Peggy was attended by Dede Beem, Delta Delta Delta and Sue Clark, Kappa Kappa Gamma and a court made up of the eight other senior women candidates.
“In her four years at DePauw, Peggy has been a member of the Boulder and Mirage staffs, AWS, YWCA, WRA and Gamma Beta Tau. This year she was house manager of Alpha Chi Omega and in her freshman year was president of her pledge class. A threat to other sororities, Peggy led the Alpha Chi basketball squad to the finals this year, piling up an average of over ten baskets every game.”

I've always known Mom is beautiful, both on the outside and on the inside, through the love which she gives freely. I didn't know she was on a basketbal team! It is true, we learn new things every day. We love you Mom!

I don't think I knew about the basketball team either. I remember that Mom was May Queen, but had never seen this article. It's great!

Great article Dad. I too, like my siblings, didn't know Mom played basketball. You do learn something new everyday.

I do remember that Mom played basketball in high school, but I didn't know about the sorority team.
