Thanksgiving

Quote from George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation 10/3/1789.

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Thanks to all in our family who served and are serving!

This link shows a touching way one Chick-fil-A restaurant honors Veterans' Day, especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

For some reason Windows 10 wasn't working well on this computer.   It was working for Steve on his computer and for one Woodland Gardens resident.   But I kept getting error messages, especially when trying to download stuff from YouTube.   So yesterday we gave up and he took me back to Windows 8.1.   In doing so, he saw where others had given up on Windows 10, so maybe there are some computers that don't do well with it.

Haven't posted anything recently.   Steve helped me install Windows 10 and has had to give me help using it.   This website and others recognize the use of new software and require some verification before use is allowed.   I think I've satisfied Truman's, so we'll see if this gets posted.   At age 95, something as complicated as Windows 10 is hard for "those little gray cells"  to handle.

A thought for Labor Day:

Let me but do my work from day to day,
In field or forest, at the desk or loom,
In roaring market-place or tranquil room;
Let me but find it in my heart to say,
When vagrant wishes beckon me astray,
"This is my work; my blessing, not my doom;
"Of all who live, I am the one by whom
"This work can best be done in the right way."
                                   Henry VanDyke

Thought for the day:

Excerpts from Gone From My Sight  by Henry Van Dyke

I am standing upon the seashore.  A ship, at my side, spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts for the blue ocean.  She is an object of beauty and strength.   I stand and watch her . . . until someone at my side says, “There, she is gone.”   Gone where?   Gone from my sight. That is all.

There are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MEGAN!
Thought for the day:

"If I were giving a young man advice as to how he might succeed in life, I would say to him, pick out a good father and mother, and begin life in Ohio."

Wilber Wright
as quoted by David McCullough in "The Wright Brothers"

I miss Scott too.  Maureen sent this photo that she took of Sarah and her girls as they all visited Scott's grave in Arlington.

This blog has become mostly a record of birthdays.   I realize that Facebook has become the medium for exchanging information.   Even so, I think I'll liven Truman's up from time-to-time with A Thought for the Day.   Maybe some of you will offer something of that nature once in a while.   This one was something Pastor Bonnie Gerber of All Saints included recently in a daily devotion.

World’s Wisdom
They’ve made their bed, now let them lie in it.
God’s Wisdom
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”
Matthew 25:35-36

HAPPY 14th ANNIVERSARY, TARA & MIKE!
Mom left us on this date three years ago.   Sometimes it's hard to believe it's been that long and even harder to believe the personality we remember so well started to leave us many years sooner.
